In printmaking, trace monotype is one of the most direct methods of creating an image. There is only the source image, inked paper, and your hand.
I created this series using this technique because I wanted there to be an intimate and vulnerable quality to the portraits. Each piece is based on an picture of a female celebrity, from the internet. A simple image search yields thousands of pictures, and each one represents a different version of the same person. Where the individual resides behind the facade interested me, so through drawing and text I exaggerated the vulnerabilities behind the appearance. Prominent teeth, expressionless stares, ubiquitous sunglasses trying hopelessly to gain a bit of privacy.
Humanizing these starlets is not my goal, instead, I want to examine our identification with with celebrities while questioning the power of the image within our culture.
